Lojong: Seven Point Mind Training

Chekawa Yeshe Dorje Seven Point Mind Training is an important text belonging to the genre of Tibetan literature known as lojong (mind training). Compiled by the twelfth century Tibetan master Chekawa Yeshe Dorje, all the teachings contained in this short work are attributed to the Indian Buddhist master Atisha Dipamkara Srijñana, who was instrumental in the revival of Buddhism in Tibet in the first part of the 11 th century CE.

A central component of this genre of texts are the diverse contemplative practices whose focus is specifically on the transformation of our habitual self-centeredness and the dissonant emotions and modes of being that arise from our clinging to egocentric perspectives. The principal intention of the ‘mind training’ or ‘thought transformation’ teachings is to set out a systematic contemplative framework for the enhancement and stabilization of our altruistic perspectives and emotions, especially those based on compassion, love, patience and perseverance. The spiritual teachings embodied in the Seven Point Mind Training are highly revered by the Tibetan people for their pragmatism and down-to-earth advice on coping with the challenges, hardships and adverse conditions that characterize our everyday human existence.
